Muktsar, Jan 27: The Punjab Police have arrested the parents of foreign-based gangster Satinderjeet Singh alias Goldy Brar in connection with an extortion case registered in Muktsar district last year.

Goldy Brar’s father Shamsher Singh and mother Preetpal Kaur, residents of Adesh Nagar on Kotkapura Road in Muktsar, were taken into custody from Amritsar following investigative leads linked to the case. The family originally hails from Faridkot district.

Senior Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Rana said the arrests were made after sustained investigation into the extortion complaint lodged by a resident of Udekaran village last year. Shamsher Singh, a former Assistant Sub-Inspector in the Punjab Police, had been compulsorily retired in 2021 after allegations surfaced regarding his involvement in a murder case in Muktsar.

Goldy Brar is the prime accused in the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Shubhdeep Singh alias Sidhu Moosewala in Mansa district and had publicly claimed responsibility for the killing. He left India in 2017 on a student visa to Canada and is believed to be currently based in the United States.

In 2024, the Union government designated Brar as an “individual terrorist” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for his alleged role in smuggling high-grade arms, ammunition and explosives into India using drones for targeted killings. He was earlier associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang but later broke away and is now linked to the Brar–Rohit Godara–Kala Jatheri syndicate.

The arrests come amid an intensified crackdown on overseas gangsters under ‘Operation Prahaar’, later renamed ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’. According to the Anti-Gangster Task Force of the Punjab Police, around 61 gangsters from the state are currently operating abroad, with 18 in the United States, nine in the UAE, six each in Canada and Germany, and five in the United Kingdom.

Police have mapped locations linked to nearly 1,200 associates and about 600 family members of these gangsters, all allegedly involved in criminal activities in Punjab. Red-corner notices have been issued against 21 foreign-based gangsters, and cash rewards have been announced for information leading to their arrest.
