Alirajpur, Jan 30: Goa Police personnel were attacked by unidentified bike-borne assailants in Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district while escorting a wanted criminal for transit remand, officials said.

According to reports, a Goa Police team had travelled to Madhya Pradesh to arrest Hira Singh Bamniya, a history-sheeter wanted in multiple criminal cases. Bamniya has been active in crime since 2009 and had been evading arrest for over five years. The team traced him to Alirajpur and arrested him following due legal procedures.

After completing documentation and a medical examination at the Bori Police Station, the police team began transporting the accused for transit remand. However, shortly after their vehicle moved out of the police station limits, around 15 to 20 attackers on motorcycles, with their faces covered, launched a sudden assault.

The attackers allegedly pelted stones at the police vehicle and assaulted personnel using sharp-edged weapons, including sickles. The vehicle’s windows were smashed and the car was damaged in what police believe was an attempt to help the accused escape.

Two police personnel were injured in the attack, including Goa Police sub-inspector Sitaram Malik, who sustained a shoulder injury. Despite the assault, the police managed to repel the attackers and prevent Bamniya from escaping.

Local police were immediately alerted, and additional forces rushed to the spot. The attackers fled after reinforcements arrived.

An FIR has been registered in connection with the assault on police personnel, damage to government property, and use of deadly weapons. Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the attackers, who are suspected to be associates of Bamniya.

“The suspect was safely brought to the Bori police station. Goa Police are now completing legal formalities to take him on transit remand for further interrogation in Goa,” Superintendent of Police Raghuvansh Kumar Singh said.
