Lucknow, Jan 31: A woman allegedly died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow after being deeply hurt by a remark made by her husband, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Tannu Singh. According to family members, the incident took place on Wednesday evening after the family returned home from a relative’s house in Sitapur. While the family members were sitting together and chatting, Tannu’s husband Rahul, an auto driver, allegedly made a joking remark, calling her “bandariya” (monkey), which reportedly upset her.

Her sister Anjali said Tannu left the room following the comment and went into another room. Rahul later went out to bring food. On his return, when he asked Anjali to call Tannu, there was no response from inside the locked room. Anjali then peeped through a window and found Tannu hanging from a cloth noose, following which she raised an alarm.

Police rushed to the spot, took the body into custody and conducted a post-mortem examination. The body was later handed over to the family. No written complaint has been filed so far, police said.

Family members said Tannu and Rahul had married around four years ago in a love marriage that was later accepted by both families. They also said Tannu had a keen interest in modelling.

Police said further action would depend on the outcome of the inquiry and any complaint received.
