Panaji man arrested for accepting matka bets, later released on bail

Panaji, Feb 7: Panaji Police on Friday registered a case and arrested a 57-year-old man for allegedly accepting matka bets in a public area near TB Hospital at Tambadi Mati, St. Inez.

The accused, identified as Pascoal Antonio Fernandes, son of late Antonio Fernandes and a resident of H.No. 169, Tambadi Mati, was caught red-handed around 5 pm on February 5 while accepting bets from members of the public. Police seized Rs 1,300 in cash and other gambling articles from his possession.

The offence was officially registered at 6.05 pm on the same day by Head Constable Anil G. Kurtikar (HC 6246) of Panaji Police Station. Fernandes was released on bail at 6.19 pm after all Supreme Court guidelines were followed.

Further investigation is ongoing under the supervision of HC Kurtikar.
