Puttur, Feb 29: Muralidhar (29), who was believed to have killed his wife, Renuka, from Kuntoor Keddotte near Kadaba, has committed suicide by hanging himself. His body was found hanging from the pendant roots of a tree some distance away from the spot where Renuka’s body was found, on Tuesday morning.
Renuka, who had left with her husband to nearby forest to collect fodder for cattle on Monday evening, had been killed with the help of a sickle and boulder. Muralidhar, who the locals said used to suffer from bouts of depression, had gone missing thereafter. With the suicide of Muralidhar, their 18-month-old child, Yajna, has been orphaned.
Muralidhar used to stay with his wife, child, father, elder brother, and sister-in-law at Keddotte. It is said he nursed a grouse against his father, who did not agree for the former’s demand for giving him a share in the landed property to enable him to start living independently. The fact that Renuka favoured living in joint family had angered him further, it is said. These facts, the locals feel, would have led to the said murder followed by suicide.
The family of Shivappa Gowda, father of Muralidhar, which had prepared to perform puja of the serpent god on Tuesday, was faced with the misfortune of having to perform the funeral of two members of the family instead.
