Mangaluru: CME & live surgery on Cochlear Implant Surgey held at Father Muller

Mangaluru, Feb 10: The department of ENT Father Muller Medical College in association with the department of audiology of Father Muller College (Speech & Hearing) successfully organized a Cochlear Implant CME and live surgery programme on February 6.

The first ever Cochlear Implant surgery in Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) was performed under the surgical mentorship of Padmashree Prof Dr Milind Kirtane. Dr Kirtane is a legendary ENT surgeon who is a pioneer in Cochlear Implant surgery and has performed over 4000 implants all across the country. On this remarkable occasion, an inauguration programme under the leadership of Dr Vinay V Rao, HOD, department of ENT and the organizing chairman of the event, was conducted.

The event commenced with a lamp lighting ceremony, presided over by Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo (director, FMCI), Dr.Micheal Santhmayor (administrator, FMMC), Fr George Jeevan Sequeira (administrator, FMMCH), Dr Anthony Sylvan D’Souza (dean, FMMC) and other dignitaries.

Dr Vinay V Rao (professor and head, ENT department) welcomed the gathering. Dr Sana Aboobaker (organising secretary) introduced the chief guest/ mentor surgeon, Prof Dr Milind V Kirtane. Dr Kirtane addressed the gathering and congratulated the institution and department of ENT for having started the cochlear implant programme for the first time in the institution’s history. He also shared words of admiration for the management for their benevolent gesture of sponsoring the cochlear implant for the patient. Dr Kirtane was felicitated with a memento by the director.

Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo then addressed the gathering and emphasized on the importance of bringing in progress through new advancements in the field of otorhinolaryngology, which will help the institution to serve the people in need of their services and to uphold the institution’s 145-year-old legacy. Dr Sana Aboobaker then delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the inaugural ceremony.

The programme was followed by cochlear implant surgery of a 3-year-old recipient by Prof Dr Kirtane. After the surgical implantation of the device, faculties from department of audiology performed the NRT and confirmed successful insertion of the implant. The surgery was completed and patient was shifted to post operative ward with stable vitals. The department of ENT grateful to the management, chief guest and all the participants for making the event a grand success. Prof Cynthia Santumayor principal of FMC (Sp & Hg) too graced the CME and along with her faculty monitored the live surgery.
