Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Feb 29: Two youngsters died in an accident that occured at Mulky near here on Wednesday February 29 at around 8.30 pm.

The deceased have been identified as Ashwin Peris (21) and Steevan Cutinha (21). Ashwin, resident of Kulshekar, was the son of Albert and Felcy Peris. The couple have another son, Denver.

Steevan Melwin Cutinha, resident of Bejai, was the elder son of Stany and Molly Cutinha, and brother of Sujay and Sanjan.

Ashwin Peris, Steevan Cutinha

The accident occured when the bike Ashwin was riding collided with a bus. Steevan was riding pillion. Ashwin is said to have died on the spot, while Steevan succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital.

They were riding from Udupi to Mangalore, and the bus was moving towards Kundapur from Mangalore. Sources said the fault was on the bus driver's part.

Both were pursuing engineering from St Joseph's College, Vamanjoor.

The bodies have been shifted to Srinivas Hospital, Suratkal. Mulky police have registered a case.

I know what it feels to be when you lose someone forever.i can relate to this..I fear death, but what I fear more is the death of my dearest ones. We don't realize how much we love them until they are taken away from us with no return. my younger brother Kritish Raj{16yrs} passed away
in a bike accident when it hit a tanker on kullur jogatte road on 19 feb 2012{10 days prior to ashwin &stevens} death.the one who was driving the bike died on the spot while my brother who sat at the back succumbed to serious head injuries.whats inhuman is that no one took him to the hospital immediately.he lay on the road bleeding.people watched him but did not try to save him.they called police waited for them and after too much of delay he was taken to the hospital.but then it was too late.i lost him forever.i want to beg&plead to the citizens -plz never let someone who met with the accident to die out of injuries.if you are present on the spot think that you are a god sent angle to save someone's life by taking them to the hospital..i don't want my brother's fate to be repeated to anyone.
It hurts to think I have got to live the rest of my life without my younger brother I don't know how people think we are going to get over these things, because I will never get over the fact that my brother wont be here anymore , I won't get over this or forget this like people want me to do they think its so easy , I can't it's that it is my brother it hurts. this is the reason why i share the pain with ashwin and steven's family

Is it rash driving or are these bus drivers operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. While consumption of alcohol in and of itself may not be dangerous, when the mind altering properties of alcohol are combined with the potential speed and mass of an automobile, the results are to often tragic. Breathalyzer should be given to all the drivers involved in an accident. Through education, increased law enforcement and stiffer penalties, the number of alcohol-related traffic accidents can be reduced.

Now is not the time to blame the bus drivers nor the two wheel drivers. Please readers, understand the root of the problem.Until dividers are installed and lanes for two way traffic are in place such accidents will continue. Hence pressurise our RTA, municipality, our politicians everyone and everyone to pave our roads safely at an earliest.

Express buses in South Kanara are killing agents. No fear for them they get commission on collection and the owners of the bus take full responsibility to save the driver and conductor. Just imagine Udupi Mangalore every minute one bus leaves the stand competition is obvious, hope the Authorities think about introducing metros between these 2 twin cities. God Bless all

Truly very sad and shocking incident! May the departed souls rest in peace.

Millions are carrying the risk to our lives in the coastal region. Several lives are being lost due to the accidents which are taking place in DK due to reckless driving, poor quality of structures/roads, lack of discipline in driving and absence of supervision and accountability. We are only bothered to protest when some religious sentiments are provoked. But the families who lost their member knows the feeling. Can’t we reduce the loss of lives?

Mr. Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mr. Palemar, Mr. Moily, Mr. Oscar and so on. They are winning elections even if they don’t perform. They are insensitive because they are fully convinced that they can get away with the voters by giving false promises. Let us form a apolitical, non-religious organization and arrange protest marches against the political leaders and remind them that they have got to show their performance. Mangalore Chamber of Commerce is convening serious meetings in support of land acquisitions for SEZ. Where is their concern when it comes to loss of lives due to infrastructure and discipline deficiency?

Daijiword had taken a major initiative to make the Mangalore Airport as Intl by giving publicity and forming the coastal organizations. I would request Daiji to take up the initiative to pressurize the concerned leadership to keep up the quality of structures/fly overs, construct under passes, round abouts and sky walkers in crucial places such as Mulky, Surathkal, Honnakatte, Baikampady, Nantoor and so on. You will save many innocent lives in the process. In the present set up, only media pressure works well.

As regards construction, what is required is an enforceable guarantee from the NHAI and a counter guarantee from the builders. As regards traffic safety, what is required is strict supervision, speed breakers, road safety sign boards and completion of uncompleted multiple lanes.

Really sad news to c the news of the 2 youngsters. The Mangalore-Udupi NH is a hidden death trap. esp. if u are travelling by night. due to the road constuction and lack of caution reflectors, not to mention lack of street lights, its very dangerous to drive with sudden diversions, some 4 lane..then suddendly two way traffic. also there is no safety on the sides of the road with rubble and stones of big size, so on a two wheeler if u slip of the road, there in no grip in the rubble n mostly if ur on high speed u will crash there. the road is also dusty with lorries carring manganese ore which flies into ur eyes if u dont have protection.

This is really shocking and we are sad beyond words can express. My heart goes out to the families of these two boys. Now it is our duty to see that such accidents are not repeated. This is a combination of many avoidable factors. Speeding buses, careless attitude of drivers, bad narrow roads, no seperation of oncoming traffic, wearing helmets (not sure if they were wearing) and so on. Two wheeler accidents and fatalities are on the rise and have to be monitored by responsible authorities. This is really a wake up call for all concerned.

Nowadays if we see on the highway of Udupi-Mangalore, there is no speed limit to the express buses and the drivers are not at all worried about the life of two wheeler riders. The RTO should be very serious about the speed limit of the express buses. Otherwise we may have to give the life of so many two wheeler riders.

Like Blue Buses in Delhi City, Express Buses in Mangalore to Kundapur/Manipal/Karkal became too much risky on the road. They fly on the road as if no tomorrow for them. Some time I wonder why this Express Bus Drivers rushing like anything. Are they gets commission for more collection? Are they owner of the Express Bus?

A very basic principle RTAI should adopt that Killer Bus Driver should be put behind bar for 7 years in jail per death per passenger, Owner should be penalized with 25 Lakhs per passenger per death compensation to next kin of deceased. Concerned RTA Officer of that particular area where road condition is very bad for passenger vehicles should be terminated from his/her services too. More & more Traffic Police Patrol should be appointed to control the vehicles movements too

In this situation the people like you need to grow up for commenting. Here the two boys have lost their life. Think about their parents and act like a human being in this case and not like a politician. This is irresponsibility and absolute shame on RTO and DK Police. Not only long distance buses, even city buses ( Route no 15, 4) plying on Bendur-Kankanady road are death vehicles..Pls avoid these buses if travelling or even is they come behind/front of you while driving. The drivers of these buses have no sense. They honk in front of school zone ( St Theresa, Agnes)while children are crossing !!!! They honk at Fr Mullers when patients are crossing...

Why is RTO and police sleeping..Please FINE them 500 or 1000 rupees on the spot, or confiscate vehicles for 3 days...then only they will come back to their senses. Also Public need to be vigilant..Pls ensure you catch and reprimand/surrender such drivers to POLICE so that they know how to handle public vehicles and public road...Mangaloreans, awake, if POLICE and GOVT is sleeping, we cannot let innocent lives go waste..Tomorrow it maybe a relative of OURS or MAYBE US...DAIJIWORLD, we need your support also to campaign for SAFE DRIVING...we will all support you globally and locally.

I pray to the LORD that their souls rest in eternal peace.
I drive through this route once every 15 days. The private bus drivers are like devils advocates. They have no respect for any road rules. They blare their horns and rush to point one to two. Anything comes on their way is either crushed to death or gone forever. Be it a Buffalo, cow, human being, car, bike etc.
The only solution I feel is that the road from Mangalore to Udipi 4- Laning is completed as soon as possible.

Why the district administration of both Udupi and Mangalore are silent about the death of young mobike riders. 90% of the fatalities are the results of head injuries. Why cant wearing helmets is made mandatory for both rider and pillion riders as its done in metros and other nations so that at least some lives are saved. We are losing precious lives of young citizens. Administration is busy in making money and not interested in the welfare of the people.....May the departed souls rest in eternal peace....

The other day i was riding towards shirva and a lorry and a bus overtaking each other came in front. I had no place to go and lost a heartbeat or two. Luckily in the nick of time i swung my car into the mud and applied the breaks else it would have been my last day on earth. These private long-distance buses should have speed lock fitted and stern action taken against erring drivers. Public too should stop such over speeding buses and puncture their tyres making them realize that over speeding will only make them late, then they will get into their senses.

May his soul rest in peace. Very sad incident. Heart felt condolence to the bereaved family members. Express buses are like Yamadootha on Kundapur to Manglore root. On new year day I was traveling to Udupi. Two express buses where competing with each other. At Brahmaver both driver stopped face to face n started using holy words of our Indian culture. Later shifted Hindi bad words. I told them today new year day end your fight for the day. Till Udupi both were riding so dangerously. All passengers got upset n scolded the driver at Udupi.
