Udupi, Feb 16: A student in Manipal has been taken into custody by the police for allegedly driving a car at high speed under the influence of alcohol and causing a series of accidents. The arrested student has been identified as Abhimanyu Negi.
Late on the night of February 14, he reportedly damaged seven two-wheelers that were parked in a row. During the incident, the car also collided with an auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction, injuring its driver, Shivaprasad (76), a resident of Badagabettu, who sustained an internal head injury.

The accused is said to have driven the car recklessly at high speed from near the college road and, later lost control of the vehicle, swerving to the extreme left and right sides of the road and causing damage. Had he entered the highway at the same speed, there was a possibility of a more serious mishap.
The accident was caused using a car bearing a Haryana registration. The two-wheelers parked by employees of establishments along the roadside were damaged in the incident. A case has been registered at the Manipal police station.
Employees and members of the public frequently use this stretch both during the day and at night, and minor accidents are reported to occur at times due to some heavy vehicles being driven at high speed in the area.
