Beltangady, Feb 18: A 53-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after consuming acid at Arla in Kalmanja village of Beltangady taluk on February 15.

The deceased has been identified as Gulabi (53), a resident of Arla. Sources said she had been living alone following the death of her husband, while her two daughters used to visit her once a week to check on her well-being.

On February 15 at around 12 noon, when her daughters visited the house as usual, Gulabi reportedly went to the backyard and later returned to the verandah, where she collapsed.

She was immediately rushed to a hospital in Ujire and later referred to a hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment. However, she is said to have breathed her last on the way.

Preliminary information suggests that she consumed acid used for processing rubber latex. The exact reason for the extreme step is yet to be ascertained.

A case has been registered at the Dharmasthala police station, and further investigation is underway.
