Pernem, Feb 19: The government has launched a major restoration and reclamation project for two ponds in Pernem — Paliem and Korgao — aimed at enhancing local tourism and recreational infrastructure.

Mandrem MLA Jeet Arolkar recently inaugurated the restored Paliem pond, which had remained neglected for over three decades. The project, undertaken at a cost of Rs 14 lakh, seeks to transform the water body into a serene recreational space for residents, particularly senior citizens.

Speaking at the inauguration in the presence of sarpanch Sneha Gawandi and other local officials, Arolkar said the initiative would introduce modern amenities while preserving the natural aesthetics of the area.

Meanwhile, MLA Praveen Arlekar along with local panchayat members inaugurated similar repair and restoration works at the Korgao pond.

Officials said the broader plan focuses on improving public spaces and strengthening tourism potential in the region. Authorities are also considering developing the scenic Palaye plateau into a tourist destination by enhancing accessibility and basic infrastructure.

The restoration drive is expected to provide improved leisure facilities for locals while attracting visitors to the coastal taluka.
