Two sisters die before wedding in Jodhpur

Jodhpur, Feb 22: Two sisters allegedly died by suicide in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur hours before they were to be married in a double wedding ceremony on Saturday. A relative has alleged foul play behind the incident.

The deceased have been identified as Shobha (25) and Vimla (23), daughters of Deep Singh. Both were working as teachers at a private school.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the sisters may have consumed a poisonous substance. However, police said the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report is received. “It would be premature to ascertain the reason for their deaths at this stage,” a police official said.

According to officials, the women’s health deteriorated in the early hours of Saturday, following which family members rushed them to a private hospital. Doctors declared them brought dead.

The family had begun preparations for the cremation when police received information about the incident. Officers reached the spot and took the bodies into custody. After post-mortem examination, the bodies were handed back to the family.

The sisters’ maternal uncle, Jaswant Singh, has accused members from their father’s side of the family of pressuring them into marriage alliances that had earlier fallen through. He alleged that Deep Singh’s brothers forced the family to go ahead with the wedding arrangements.

Police said the allegations are being examined as part of the investigation. A case of unnatural death has been registered and further enquiry is underway.
