Karkala: Mysore Lokayukta SP S E D’Souza Dies on Duty

Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (SP)

Karkala, Mar 2: S E D’Souza, a native of Karkala, who was discharging duties as the Lokayukta superintendent of police (SP) in Mysore, died of massive heart attack at his office on the evening of Thursday March 1.

He is survived by wife, Anita D’Souza, sons, Alfred Vivek, and Albert Sunil. Family sources said his funeral would be conducted on Friday.

D’Souza was known to be a simple, straightforward, efficient, and honest police officer. He attended office as usual on Thursday morning. At around 3.30 pm, he suffered from severe pain near the left armpit and right side of the heart. He felt the pain was caused by gastric problem, and swallowed a tablet after getting it through the staff. Thereafter, he went to the rest room at the first floor of his office, removed his shirt, and took rest. He did not come down even at 5 pm. When one of the constables went up to see, he found that D’Souza had died.

Lokayukta deputy SP, Jayaram, said that everyone ran up to rest room after the constable shouted. “As his entire body had become cold and saliva had come out of his mouth, we rubbed his chest, hand, and feet, in an effort to bring him back to life. He was rushed to Vikram Hospial as there was no response, where the doctors pronounced him brought dead,” he explained.

One of the doctors felt that D’Souza would have survived, had he known that the pain he suffered from was the preliminary symptom of heart attack.

Immediately after information about D’Souza’s death spread, senior police officers like Basavaraj Malagatti, Jayaram, Hanumantarayappa, Dharani Devi Malagatti, district and sessions judge, H P Sandesh and others, rushed to the hospital. The body was thereafter carried to his residence at Alanahalli in Mysore.

D’Souza, born in Karkala, had joined the police department in the capacity of sub-inspector in 1974. He had severed various places in north Karnataka, Mandya, and Mysore district in different capacities. He was working as deputy SP at Hunsur subdivision, before being promoted as SP in 2007, and getting transferred as Mysore Lokayukta SP in 2008.

The simplicity of D’Souza was borne out of the fact that he used to reach his office in his moped from his home in Alanahalli Lay Out, without using office vehicle for the same.

An upright, honest and Mr. Clean - a rarity in Government circles and more so in Police Department. He was a rare jewel in the Christian community representing the police department. Soft and sober like civil person but tough when it came to criminals, corrupt and thugs. He was my best man during my wedding in the year 1980. More so he was the best man of Lokayukta force in Mysore District. In his death we have lost able and efficient Police Officer and the family has lost a darling. He was my first cousin and my family joins me in offering heartfelt condolences to Anitha and her two sons. A fitting and touching burial was given to him yesterday by the loved ones and by the police department with police honors parting gun salute. May his soul rest in peace.
