New smart card system rolled out in all RTO offices across Karnataka

Bengaluru, Feb 27: ‘One Nation-One Card’ smart cards have been distributed for the past two months in all RTO offices across the state, including Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts.

In line with the central government’s Digital India concept, the scheme has been implemented with the objective of providing integrated and convenient services to vehicle users. Under this initiative, services related to vehicle registration (RC) and driving licence (DL) will be available through a uniform smart card model across the country.

The card will store vehicle details, owner information, and driving licence details in an electronic chip and QR code. This is expected to reduce the problem of fake documents and enable officials to instantly verify information during inspections.

The initiative has been implemented in coordination with the union ministry of road transport and highways and the National Informatics Centre. The card can also be linked with online services through the Parivahan Seva portal. Since a driving licence or vehicle registration document obtained in one state will be easily valid in other states, it is said that citizens may not need to visit offices frequently.

Vehicle registration and driving licence cards have now been introduced in a new format. These high-tech cards, equipped with QR codes and chips, will be issued to newly registered vehicles and to applicants applying for new driving licences. The old cards will continue as usual.

New cards are also being issued when applications are submitted for ownership transfer, registration renewal, hypothecation termination and related procedures, renewal of licence cards, and address change.

According to RTO officials the issue of letters fading on old cards will not exist in the new cards. All vehicle-related details are embedded in the card and can be easily accessed by scanning the QR code.
