Udupi, March 3: The rainwater canal near the police quarters at Rajivnagar in Manipal has reportedly turned into a drainage channel, with wastewater flowing directly into it, triggering serious concern among residents over the potential spread of waterborne diseases.
The canal, originally intended to carry rainwater runoff, is now filled with untreated wastewater, emitting a foul odour that has rendered the surrounding air almost unbreathable. Residents living nearby say they are forced to cover their noses while passing through the area because of the stench.
The locality houses commercial establishments, residential buildings, religious centres and police quarters, making the issue one of public health and hygiene. The stagnant, contaminated water could become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacteria, heightening the risk of diseases such as dengue and other waterborne infections.
It is learnt that the polluted water from the canal eventually flows into the nearby Mannapalla Lake. Environmental concerns have been raised over the possible contamination of the lake’s clean water. There is apprehension that toxic substances present in the wastewater could harm aquatic life and disturb the ecological balance of the lake.
Social worker Nithyanad Volakad, convener of the Udupi District Citizen Committee, has expressed serious concern over the issue. He has urged the district administration and the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to halt the inflow of wastewater into the rainwater canal and implement a permanent solution to prevent further environmental damage.
