Kasargod, Mar 3: The passengers of Cheruvathur-Mangalore passenger train had a providential escape, after three pipe bombs were found on the fourth railway track near Cheruvathur railway station in the district on Saturday March 3 morning. The bombs were recovered a few minutes after this train passed through the spot.
A passerby accidentally spotted these bombs. It may be recalled that subversive elements had tried to undertake such activities in the past too in the district, by placing boulders, concrete slabs, steel pipes etc on the tracks with a view to derail the trains and cause loss of lives and property. Luckily, they were either found before they could inflict damages, or the trains moved over them without suffering any catastrophe.
As soon as the information was conveyed, railway police rushed to the spot, and covered the area with sand bags. Policemen of Chandera station, railway police, bomb disposal squad, sniffer dogs, and senior officials visited the spot and assessed the situation.
District superintendent of police (SP), S Surendran, Kanhangad assistant SP, Manjunath, special branch assistant SP, A Harishchandra Nayak, and senior railway officials continue to inspect the area, take stock of the situation, and guide the investigating agencies. In the meanwhile, the task of spotting and nailing those behind this activity has been given fillip.
The officials are clear about the fact that an organized gang aiming to derailing trains and disrupting normal lives, is active in the district. The senior officials, taking stock of past incidents, had in the past, instructed railway officials to undertake all precautionary measures to ensure safety of passengers and trains.
The senior police and railway officials have sounded alert everywhere and instructed the concerned to keep vigil on railway stations, bridges, and other places to avert any accidents arising out of the activities of such sabotages.
