Puttur, Mar 10: Five children from the same family and their father, an auto-rickshaw driver, sustained injuries after a speeding car collided with their vehicle on Monday, March 9 evening in Uppinangady.

The injured have been identified as the auto driver, Kalandar Shafi, and his children Mohammed Jazeer (13), Mohammed Irshad (11), Mohammed Raziq (9), Mohammed Noor (5), and Sazma (4). Among them, Kalandar Shafi, Sazma, and Mohammed Jazeer sustained critical injuries and have been admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.

Kalandar Shafi was reportedly picking up his children from the Government Model Higher Primary School in Uppinangady and was heading towards their home in 34 Nekkilady. As the auto-rickshaw was moving, a car travelling from Mangaluru towards Uppinangady entered the service road from the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway at a high speed.

The car rammed into the oncoming auto-rickshaw with such force that the three-wheeler overturned, causing injuries to all six occupants. Eyewitnesses attributed the accident to the reckless and negligent driving of the car driver.

A case has been registered at the local police station, and further investigations are underway.
