Mangaluru: ‘Kavya Vhalo-12’ Konkani poets’ meet held

Mangaluru, Mar 14: A poets’ meet titled ‘Kavya Vhalo-12’ was organised by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy at the academy hall on March 14. The programme was presided over by academy president Joachim Stany Alvares.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the ‘Kavya Vhalo’ programme was launched on March 8, 2025, on the occasion of International Women’s Day for women, and has now reached its 12th edition after conducting eleven monthly poets’ meets. He expressed happiness over the progress of the initiative. He also welcomed the gathering and stated that the Government of Karnataka had established the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy for the Konkani community, giving importance to the development of Konkani language, art, culture and literature, and playing a significant role in bringing the Konkani community together.

Chief guest, renowned senior Konkani actor Adolphus Coutinho (Dolla Mangalore), speaking on the occasion, said that acting involves a wide range of skills including a well-developed imagination, emotional sensitivity, physical expression, singing, clarity in speech and the ability to understand drama. He added that the tendency of human beings to engage in imitation from childhood and to enjoy such imitation is quite natural. He appreciated the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy for recognising and honouring art lovers of the Konkani community and experienced individuals from various fields, and extended his best wishes to the academy.

Senior Konkani activist and well-known actress and poet Geeta C Kini was felicitated on the occasion.

The poets’ meet was conducted by noted poet Salomi D’Souza, who also gave detailed introductions about the poets and their poems. Valerian Sequeira, Melvin Vas Nirmarg, Flavia Castelino, Anthony Lewis Manipal, Roshan Castelino, Shaila Manglurkar, Stany D’Souza, Satyavati Kamath, Suvarna Gad Honnavar and Poornima Suresh Nayak recited their poems during the programme.

Academy member Ronald Crasta compered the programme and proposed the vote of thanks. Members Samarth Bhat, Naveen Lobo and Akshata Nayak were present.
