Mangaluru, Mar 15: The city is set to witness a historic moment in its sporting journey as the Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association (DKCA), with the support of NorthernSky Properties, presents the city’s first-ever women’s leather-ball cricket tournament.
Scheduled from March 16 to March 21, the tournament will take place at the iconic Nehru Maidan, marking a significant milestone for women’s cricket in the coastal region.
For decades, Nehru Maidan has been the heart of cricket in Mangaluru. Now, for the first time, it will echo the ambitions, determination, and talent of women cricketers from across the district and neighbouring regions.
The tournament will feature five competitive teams, two from Mangaluru and one each from Udupi, Manipal, and Brahmavar making it a celebration of cricketing talent from across the coastal belt.
The competition will begin with 25-overs-per-side league matches, culminating in a 30-over grand finale. In total, spectators will witness ten league matches and one championship final, promising an exciting week of high-energy cricket.
The inaugural match will begin at 8:30 am on March 16, and cricket enthusiasts across the city are encouraged to come together and support these emerging athletes.
A Platform for Women in Cricket
For the DKCA, the tournament represents far more than a sporting event.
It is designed as a platform for aspiring women cricketers to gain valuable match experience, test their skills in competitive conditions, and gain visibility in the regional cricketing ecosystem.
The association hopes that this tournament will become a launch-pad for future talent, encouraging more girls in the region to pursue cricket seriously and dream of representing their state and country.
To further strengthen the development of women’s cricket, DKCA has also announced that it will conduct free cricket coaching sessions for women during the season, helping nurture talent at the grassroots level and build a strong pipeline of future players.
NorthernSky’s Commitment to Community
Supporting this landmark initiative is NorthernSky Properties Pvt Ltd, which has come forward as the title sponsor of the tournament.
Known for building thoughtfully designed residential spaces across Mangaluru, NorthernSky believes that its responsibility to the community extends beyond construction.
At the announcement of the tournament, the company emphasized that supporting women’s sports aligns closely with its vision of empowering communities and creating meaningful opportunities.
Speaking about the initiative, the company’s director shared her vision for the future of women’s cricket in the region. "The women of Dakshina Kannada have always had the passion and the skill. What they needed was a stage. We at NorthernSky are deeply interested in creating a platform for women to showcase that talent. By supporting this tournament, we hope to ignite a dream in every girl watching—the dream to wear the blue jersey. We don't just want to see them play; we want to see them represent India in the future. This is our commitment,” said Kritheen Amin.
Building Opportunities Beyond Real Estate
For NorthernSky, this partnership reflects a broader philosophy — that companies should contribute actively to the communities in which they operate.
While the company builds homes and neighbourhoods across the region, initiatives like the NorthernSky Cup demonstrate its commitment to building opportunities as well.
The sight of five women’s teams stepping onto the field at Nehru Maidan is expected to be a moment of pride for the entire coastal community, one that may inspire countless young girls to take up the sport.
As the tournament begins, one message stands clear: “When women are given a platform to play, an entire community moves forward.”
