Mangaluru, Mar 16: The historic St Joseph Church, Kalavar-Pezar, one of the oldest parishes in the diocese of Mangalore, is set to host the 242nd annual Way of the Cross devotion at the sacred Holy Hill (Kursa Guddo) on Tuesday, March 31. This centuries-old tradition, which commemorates the spiritual resilience of the coastal Christian community, is expected to draw thousands of devotees from across the state.

The devotion at Pezar holds deep historical significance, dating back to February 25, 1784 (Ash Wednesday). Historical records note that during the captivity of Mangalorean Catholics, churches in the region were destroyed and the faithful were persecuted. To honour the memory of those who suffered and to keep the flame of faith alive, this interrupted tradition of the Way of the Cross was established.

The spiritual journey will begin in the morning at the parish grounds with a spiritual retreat and prayer sessions for pilgrims from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. At 3:00 pm, the Divine Mercy Rosary will be recited by the Diocesan Charismatic Renewal team, followed by a special Lenten reflection and preaching at 4:00 pm. The solemn Eucharistic celebration will take place at 5:00 pm and will be presided over by Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangalore.

Following the Holy Mass, the bishop will lead the traditional Way of the Cross, trekking up the scenic and prayerful Holy Hill. The devotion will conclude with the solemn veneration of the Holy Relic of the Body of Christ, which is considered a rare and sacred privilege for the gathered faithful.

In alignment with the diocesan theme for 2026, ‘Year of Children’, special arrangements and prayers have been dedicated to the well-being and spiritual growth of the younger generation during this pilgrimage. Fr Ronald D’Souza, parish priest of Pezar, has extended a warm welcome to all devotees and urged them to participate in this ‘Journey of Faith’ in large numbers.

Necessary arrangements for transport, security, and medical aid have been coordinated with local authorities to ensure a smooth pilgrimage, particularly for the elderly and the differently-abled.
