Thousands of litres wasted as pipeline bursts during gas work in Raia

Margao, Mar 26: At a time when several parts of Goa are grappling with water scarcity, a major pipeline burst at Arlem in Raia on Wednesday led to the wastage of thousands of litres of water, triggering concern among residents.

The incident reportedly occurred during ongoing gas pipeline work, when an underground water pipeline was accidentally damaged, causing a sudden rupture. Within minutes, large volumes of water gushed out, flooding the surrounding area and flowing into nearby drains.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with water spreading rapidly across the road and creating flood-like conditions. The situation not only resulted in the loss of precious drinking water but also disrupted traffic movement, as vehicles struggled to navigate waterlogged stretches.

Residents expressed anger over the incident, especially in light of the ongoing water shortage in many areas. Locals said they are forced to store water daily due to irregular supply, making the wastage even more distressing.

Some residents blamed poor coordination between departments, stating that infrastructure works are often carried out without adequate checks on existing utility lines. Commuters also raised safety concerns, pointing out that water-covered roads made it difficult to assess depth, posing risks, particularly for two-wheeler riders.

Locals noted that such incidents have occurred in the past as well, calling for stricter supervision and accountability to prevent recurrence. They urged authorities to ensure better planning and coordination while executing infrastructure projects.

Though repair work was reportedly initiated after some delay, there was no immediate official statement from concerned authorities at the time of reporting.

The incident has once again highlighted the need for improved monitoring and execution of development works, especially in areas already facing water scarcity.
