Udupi: Dangerous merge point on NH 66 near Karavali bypass raises safety concerns

Udupi, Mar 26: Motorists traveling on National Highway 66 between Udupi and Kundapur have been urged to exercise extreme caution near the Karavali bypass flyover junction, where a hazardous road condition has become a growing concern.

The stretch, located close to the flyover on the Karavali bypass, has become particularly risky due to worn-out tar that has accumulated along the edge where the service road joins the highway. Commuters, especially motorcyclists taking a diversion from the highway onto the service road, are facing serious difficulty as the collected tar remains largely invisible. This often leads to a loss of balance, causing riders to skid and fall—sometimes onto the opposite side of the road—posing a major threat to their safety.

Several accidents have already been reported at this spot, raising alarm among daily travelers and local residents. Despite the seriousness of the issue, only temporary measures have been implemented so far, with National Highway authorities placing traffic cones to alert motorists.

Commuters have urged the authorities to take immediate and permanent corrective action, including resurfacing the damaged stretch, improving visibility, and ensuring a proper lane-merging design to prevent further mishaps.
