Mullanpur, Mar 31: IPL 2025 runners-up Punjab Kings and 2022 champions Gujarat Titans kick off their IPL 2026 campaign in Mullanpur with both sides aiming to set the tone early in the tournament.
For Punjab, the focus will be on proving that last season’s run to the final was no fluke. Gujarat, meanwhile, enter with a strong bowling core but continued reliance on their top order, a factor that could shape their campaign.
At the centre of the contest are captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, both looking to reinforce their standing in the T20 format. Gill, despite consistent IPL performances, is still working to cement his place in India’s T20 plans, while Iyer, coming off a prolific 2025 season, remains out of the national T20 setup.

Punjab’s success last year was built around their explosive opening pair, but concerns linger over their middle order, which struggled for consistency. The spotlight will also be on Australia’s Cooper Connolly, who is set to feature at No. 3 as a replacement for Josh Inglis.
Gujarat’s strength continues to lie in their top order, with Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler forming a formidable trio. Their bowling attack, featuring Rashid Khan, Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada, remains one of the most balanced in the league. However, inconsistency in the middle order remains a concern.
Punjab will also look to improve their home record after managing just two wins in five matches in Mullanpur last season. The absence of Lockie Ferguson in the early phase could impact their pace attack.
The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm, with conditions expected to favour batters on a flat Mullanpur pitch. Clear weather and high temperatures around 36°C are forecast, ensuring uninterrupted play.
