Probe Report on Boat Hit-and-Run Likely Thursday

Chennai, March 7 (IANS): A report on the probe into the alleged involvement of cargo ship M.V. Prabhu Daya in an hit-and-run case off the Kerala coast March 1 is likely to be ready in two days, said an official of Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) Tuesday.

According to him, two officials from MMD based out of Kochi are conducting the probe which would continue Wednesday.

The probe team includes officials from the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard.

While the team found marks on the left side of the ship belonging to Tolani Shipping, investigating officials were not in a position to confirm whether the mark was due to collision with fishing boat Don-1.

The M.V.Prabhu Daya reached the outer anchorage of the Chennai Port late Monday night.

The ship is suspected to be involved in the accident off the Kerala coast in which three fishermen on board a fishing vessel, Don-1, were killed.

The accident happened off Manakodam light house, 20 nautical miles off the Kochi harbour entrance.

Don-1 had left Kollam for deep sea fishing with seven fishermen on board Feb 26.

Indian shipping authorities suspected the M.V. Prabhu Daya as it did not respond to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) out of the eight ships that were near the accident area.

M.V. Prabhu Daya is 2001-built bulk carrier that sails under the Singaporean flag. The vessel was enroute from Panaji to Singapore.
