Congress Leaders Meet to Review Poll Performance

New Delhi, Mar 7 (IANS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi met key leaders here Wednesday to take stock of the party's dismal performance in the assembly elections in five states.

According to sources in the party, all general secretaries, including Rahul Gandhi, were at the meeting held at the Congress president's 10 Janpath residence.

The meeting will review the Congress' performance in the elections, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, party insiders said.

The party managed only 28 seats in in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly, where Rahul Gandhi had campaigned extensively.

The party also lost in Punjab and Goa. In Uttarakhand, it managed to pull one seat more than BJP with 32. The only face saver was Manipur, where it swept the elections for a third term.

"Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh have taken responsibility for the party's debacle in the two states. The immediate priority for the party is to form the government in Uttarakhand," a party sources said.

"Captain Amarinder Singh will be meeting Congress president... He has also offered to quit," the source added.

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh had also met Sonia Gandhi Tuesday and offered his resignation, owing responsibility for the defeat in Uttar Pradesh.
