Kundapur, Apr 6: A house was completely gutted in a fire reportedly caused by an electrical short circuit at Handakunda near Neralakatte in Karkunje village on Saturday late night.

The house belonging to Ganapu Shetty, a semi-stone structure, suffered extensive damage, with the roof and walls partially destroyed. Household items including gold ornaments, cash, television, electronic appliances, clothes and utensils were completely burnt in the blaze.

Ganapu Shetty and his grandson, the only occupants of the house, had locked the house and gone to attend a bhajan programme at a nearby residence on Saturday night. It is suspected that the fire broke out after midnight.

Around 2 am, a passerby noticed the flames and alerted others. By then, a major portion of the house had already been destroyed.

Fire and emergency personnel from Kundapur, along with local residents, rushed to the spot and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby cattle shed.
