Panaji, Apr 6: A 23-year-old woman lost her life and her colleague sustained serious injuries after a speeding car hit their two-wheeler at Dona Paula in Goa during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Diksha Gopal Parwadkar, a native of Karnataka, while the injured, D Arunkumar (26), a resident of Margao, is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to police, the duo, who worked at the front office of the Taj Convention Centre, were returning home after work when the accident occurred.

The car involved, a newly purchased Mini Cooper, was being driven by 22-year-old Darius Myles Dias, son of a businessman. Police said the vehicle, which was temporarily registered, was heading from Dona Paula towards Bambolim when it rammed into the two-wheeler from behind near the junction.

The impact was severe, throwing both riders into the air and dragging the two-wheeler over 50 metres. The car’s airbags deployed, and its front portion, including bonnet, headlamp, bumper and windshield, was extensively damaged.

Darius Myles Dias has been arrested in connection with the case, said Panaji Police Inspector Vijaykumar Chodankar.

Both victims were rushed to hospital after the incident, where Diksha succumbed to her injuries, while Arunkumar continues to receive treatment.

An eyewitness said the car was speeding when it approached the junction and struck the two-wheeler as it was crossing the road.

Police have registered a case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence. Officials said a preliminary alcohol test on the accused was negative, while blood samples have been sent for further examination to determine if he was under the influence.

Meanwhile, locals have demanded installation of speed breakers on the stretch, alleging that the road between Dona Paula and Bambolim has become a racing zone for youths.
