Row erupts over BMC fund allocation, opposition alleges bias

Mumbai, Apr 10: A political controversy has erupted in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation over the distribution of development funds, with opposition parties alleging discriminatory allocation in favour of the ruling alliance.

Following the disbursal of Rs 800 crore from the civic body’s development pool, parties including Shiv Sena (UBT) and Indian National Congress claimed that their corporators received significantly lower funds compared to those from the ruling Mahayuti alliance.

According to allocation details, several corporators from the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena were reportedly allotted funds running into crores, while many opposition representatives received around Rs 25 lakh each for ward-level development works.

The opposition has termed the distribution politically biased, arguing that it undermines equitable development across Mumbai’s wards and could impact essential civic projects in areas represented by non-ruling parties. They have also demanded greater transparency in the allocation process.

However, civic officials have rejected the allegations, stating that the funds were distributed based on proposals and development demands submitted by corporators to the standing committee.
