Mangalore, Mar 8: A grand felicitation was organized to retired deputy commissioner of police, G A Bawa, at Town Hall here on Wednesday March 7. The function was organized by G A Bawabhinandane Samiti.

A documentary film titled ‘Bawa Mattu Baduku’, made by Mangalore Media Centre was released by educationist, Prof K E Radhakrishna, on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Radhakrishna noted that ‘Bawa’ signifies a relationship. He said people like Bawa, who is pure-hearted, unblemished, and humane, are very much necessary in the present day society, where there are many who try to foment trouble in the name of caste, language, religion, water, etc.

“People of Dakshina Kannada district, who are now accustomed to living under the clouds of a lurking fear, needs to sincerely take up the task of upholding cultural values. Bawa, who showed to the world that poverty need not become an impediment if the person concerned has the will to succeed, has emerged as an icon for many,” he added. On the occasion, the said documentary was also screened.

Nitte University chancellor, N Vinaya Hegde, presided over the function.

B S Kaveri, who helped and guided Bawa to get education and then bag an employment, was felicitated on the occasion. Dr Sham Bhat represented her at the function. Actress, Dr Jayamala, honoured Vasanti J Ariga, Pushpavati U Rai, and Bawa’s wife, Mumtaz Bawa.

Jayamala said that Bawa always treats every human being with love and respect, and lays impetus on improving mutual relationships. His life infuses a sense of confidence among others, and the documentary on him helps people to improve their personalities, she felt.

Journalists, Ravi Belagere, delivering keynote address, felt that this felicitation should have been held at Bangalore, immediately after Bawa retired. He appreciated Bawa for putting in efforts to ensure that the underworld from Mumbai did not spread their wings to Bangalore. “The people of Bangalore are highly indebted to him. Bawa stands tall as an example to prove that the people who go through poverty become refined personalities. The people of this region should shun religious bias and choose their legislators only on the basis of their humanity. They should elect Bawa in the coming days,” he said.

In response to the felicitation, Bawa noted that his fans had organized this function purely on the love and affection towards him, and not backed by any political overtones. “Belagere would have asked you to elect me as your representative, but I have no interest in politics. I will continue to hold human values high in my life,” he said.

President of the felicitation committee, M Sureshchandra Shetty, was present at the dais.

Honorary president, Ajit Kumar Malady, welcomed. Convener, Ummer U H, proposed vote of thanks. Member of the committee, B A Muhammed Ali, presented the programme.

Gulam Ahmed Bawa is a very honest police officer. he never shown partiality. I remember when he was the inspector in Karkala all anti social elements in Karkala controlled by a known Congress leader (expired now) were gone hiding. In 1990s When i got my visa from Kuwait and wanted urgent P.C.C. in a week. I went to passport office in Bangalore but they refused to issue and asked to get letter from Karkala Police station. I went to Bawa knowing he was the Inspector in Bangalore. He immediately prepared a letter and took me in his bike to the passport office and got my job done in a hour. I pray almighty to keep him in good health and his family.

I think he is the same Bawa once deputed to Karkala Police Station in his career. I still remember one of my Aunt used to praise then Inspector “Bawa” for controlling his brother well known for Goonda and Rowdy activities. She used to tell me, because of “Bawa” your Mama behaving like human beings and left Goonda/Rowdy activities for good
