Udupi: 29-year-old Dies in Tragic Road Mishap

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Mar 8: In a tragic hit-and-run accident, a 29-year-old man lost his life after his bike was hit by a tanker near Kallianpur bridge, Santhekatte on NH 66 near here on Thursday March 8.

The deceased has been identified as Melwyn Rodrigues, proprietor of I-Focus Digital Studio, Kallianpur.

He was the son of Lukas and Ida Rodrigues of Kumbarbettu, Sasthan, and brother of Rolwyn and Renita Priya.

The accident occured at around 8.20 am when a tanker rammed into Melwyn's bike and sped on. Melwyn fell on to road, and just then another vehicle passed over his stomach. But that vehicle too did not stop.

It is said that Melwyn was lying on the road in a severely injured state for around 15 minutes before help could arrive. Though there were people around, no one helped, and this delay reportedly led to his death. He expired at around 10.15 am.

Malpe police have registered a case.

    Mr Deepak Kumar/Mangalore,

By offering your condolences to the bereaved family, your responsibility doesnt end there. All citizens of our district should come together to make our roads safe and rules that make drivers safe. U agree or disagree who cares. What we care is how we can save more young lives in the future. Thats more humane and need of the hour. Lost lives cant be regained. But we can atleast save future casualities by bringing in safety related issues and laws. Thats it. Dont give lecture here that irritates others.

Melwyn, may your soul rest in eternal peace and give comfort and solace to your beloved parents Lucas and Ida Rodrigues and also to Rolwyn and Renita Priya. My heartfelt condolences to the entire bereaved family and friends. A tragic loss to the family for a young person to die at a young age. The two drivers who hit and ran leaving him to die on this busy road. What kind of heart did the people who saw the accident did not do anything. Maybe he would have survived had somebody had taken him to a hospital. The killer and murderer drivers should be caught and hanged to death. It is for the police department to ahndle the case and give justice to the Rodrigues family. I feel somebody must have seen the two hit and run vehicles as it happened at 8.30 am.

May his soul RIP. Due to the increasing accidents, the expressway between Industrial city of Jubail & Dammam in KSA is banned for trailers/tankers during peak hrs(6~8AM & 4~6PM),which considerably reduced the road accidents. I believe the trucks & tankers should be banned during peak hrs to ensure the safety of 2 wheelers. Mangalore-Udupi highway is extremely unsafe for bikes & it is time some proactive action is initiated before we loose more lives.

Then only we can expect some helping hands in such incidences, may be a victim may get timely help.

No doubt accidents are occuring due to the negligence of some well known heavy duty drivers but I think two wheelers are not safe to drive on National Highways as they are totally controlled on balance.Sorry to know that timely help was not rendered by our own people for 15 minutes. Our roads are not at all meant for bike ride, moreover these tanker & other havvy vehicle drivers are least bothered about bike & other light vehicles, they know suppose they meet with any accident with light vehicle they will not loose anything but just offer a surity for small amount and come out from bail! unless otherwise there is amendment to motor vehilce act and widening our roads same kind of accidents will repeat again & again.

I had reacted a few days back when two engineering students were killed in a bike accident. This is not just a wake up call but this is really alarming. If I can recall we lost 6 young lives in the last 2 or 3 weeks in and around Mangalore. Responsible authorities and community leaders need to act immediately.
