Puttur, Mar 9: A fire, which got ignited suddenly unnoticed by anyone, burnt down several trees located within the compound of the government community hospital in Uppinangady near here, on Thursday March 8 evening.

No one knows how the fire got started and spread so fast. It is suspected that some negligent smokers would have carelessly thrown burning butt of their bidis or cigarettes away, or alternativesly, some miscreants would have started the fire on purpose.

As there were dry leaves spread on the ground, the fire spread rapidly. There was apprehension that the the residential quarters of the hospital employees located close to these trees might catch fire.

Fire brigade was summoned to douse the fire. The fire brigade personnel, who rushed to the spot in time, could extinguish the fire before it could inflict more damages. Even after their operation was completed, flames continued to appear on a number of trees.
