Rooney calls on Arsenal fans to rally behind team amid title race pressure

New Delhi, Apr 20: Former England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has urged Arsenal supporters to step up their backing as the club navigates a tense phase in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal’s hopes of ending a 22-year wait for the league title suffered a setback following a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City. The loss has intensified pressure on the North London side, with the reigning champions narrowing the gap and holding a game in hand. The result came on the back of inconsistent performances, including a frustrating home defeat to AFC Bournemouth earlier this month, which drew boos from sections of the crowd.

Reflecting on the situation during the “Wayne Rooney Show,” Rooney stressed the importance of fan support during difficult spells, especially given Arsenal’s strong form for most of the season.

“I think the Arsenal fans need to be better. I saw them booing the team off the other day. Arsenal have been brilliant all season and they've just hit a slight dip in form,” Rooney said.

With only five matches remaining, Arsenal are still in contention but face a significant challenge in holding off Manchester City’s late surge. Rooney believes the atmosphere created by supporters could play a decisive role in boosting player morale during the final stretch.

“They need to understand how much fan support means to the players. The team has worked incredibly hard to reach this position, and negative reactions after a loss can impact confidence,” he explained, adding that stronger backing from the stands could be crucial if Arsenal are to clinch the title.

Having experienced similar title disappointments—most notably during the 2022–23 season—there may be lingering doubts among supporters. However, Rooney emphasised that unwavering encouragement could help the players overcome psychological pressure.

Drawing comparisons with his former club, Manchester United, he highlighted how fans continued to support the team even during difficult periods under managers like Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

“If you look at Manchester United in recent years, even in tough times, the fans stayed behind the manager and the team. They kept singing and rarely turned on the players,” Rooney noted.

He also questioned the reaction of Arsenal fans in light of the club’s achievements this season, including their strong league standing and progress in the UEFA Champions League.

“Arsenal have led the league for most of the season and reached the Champions League semi-finals. To be booed off after one defeat can hurt the players. The fans need to stand by them more,” Rooney added.
