Berlin, Apr 21: At least 11 people were injured after a violent clash broke out at a gurdwara in Moers city, located in the Duisburg locality of Germany, prompting a major police response.

According to reports, around 40 individuals were involved in the altercation inside the religious premises. Videos circulating on social media showed chaotic scenes, with people engaging in physical fights and using sharp objects such as knives and kirpans.

Witnesses said pepper spray was also used during the clash, and a firearm was allegedly discharged, triggering panic among devotees present at the gurdwara.

German police, including special tactical units, were deployed to control the situation. Emergency services treated the injured on-site, and officials confirmed that none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the violence may have been triggered by internal disputes related to the election of a new board of directors and disagreements over control of gurdwara funds.

A 56-year-old eyewitness told local media that the attack appeared to be pre-planned, claiming that some individuals arrived with pepper spray and weapons before the altercation began.

“There have been conflicts for some time, mainly over influence and control of the temple. When the attack started, many people fled in panic,” the witness said.

Police have detained at least one suspect, while the criminal investigation department is working to identify others involved and establish the sequence of events.

Authorities also said the firearm used in the incident has not yet been recovered, though shell casings found at the scene suggest it may have been a blank-firing pistol.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the clash and those responsible.
