Panaji, Apr 23: Vasco is set for a major urban makeover as the Goa State Urban Development Agency has secured approval for nine infrastructure projects worth Rs 120 crore under the Centre’s Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment Scheme for 2025–26.

The projects, aimed at revitalising the historic core of the Mormugao Municipal Council area, include road upgrades, park redevelopment, streetscape improvements, market modernisation, and enhanced public transport facilities. Officials said the state could receive incentives of up to Rs 140 crore if all proposals meet the scheme’s guidelines.

Among the key initiatives, the largest project involves the beautification of Swatantra Path and FL Gomes Road, with an estimated cost of Rs 29.5 crore, focusing on road networks, footpaths, and improved lighting. Another major project is the redevelopment of the stretch between Vasco da Gama railway station and TB Cunha Circle, planned as a modern streetscape corridor at a cost of Rs 25 crore.

The plan also includes transforming the Vasco fruit market into a modern food plaza, rebuilding the Kosambi building commercial complex, and redeveloping municipal staff quarters into a new commercial hub. Public spaces will see upgrades as well, with redevelopment of municipal gardens and a dedicated children’s park.

Additional components include citywide improvements to bus stops and the introduction of a comprehensive signage and wayfinding system to enhance navigation within the urban core.

The central scheme is designed to rejuvenate historically significant city areas by promoting pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, expanding public spaces, and enabling adaptive reuse of underutilised government properties.

Officials said the projects are expected to significantly improve urban mobility, boost local commerce, and enhance the overall aesthetic and functional appeal of Vasco’s core areas.
