Mangaluru, Apr 23: Former MLA Moideen Bava has strongly opposed the proposed merger of the NMPA English Medium School in Mangaluru North zone with another school near the New Mangalore Port, urging authorities not to shut down or merge the institution.

Addressing a press conference at Hotel Woodlands on Thursday evening, Bava stated that the school, which has been functioning for nearly 40 years, is a vital educational hub for the region. He noted that after receiving complaints from 84 students and teachers regarding the proposed move, he personally visited the school and assured his support to protect it.

Bava warned officials of the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) against any attempts to close or merge the school. He stated that if such efforts continue, peaceful protests would be organised in the area.

He also expressed concern that admissions for the upcoming academic year have not yet commenced. Urging immediate action, he called upon the NMPA secretary and chairman to issue orders to start admissions, especially for class 1, as the new academic session is fast approaching.

Highlighting the historical significance of the institution, Bava said many families in areas such as Chitrapura, Hosabettu, Surathkal, Katipalla, Kana, and Krishnapura had originally relocated to facilitate the development of the New Mangalore Port. For these communities, the school has served as an important centre of education for generations.

He further stated that he has already brought the matter to the attention of the education minister, pointing out that there is no provision to merge or close such an institution in this manner. He also urged the NMPA administration to restart LKG and UKG classes, which were reportedly discontinued earlier.

Bava appealed to the authorities to prioritize quality education for children in the region and preserve the legacy of the institution.
