Jalandhar, Apr 25: Aam Aadmi Party workers staged a protest outside cricketer-turned-politician Harbhajan Singh’s residence on Saturday, a day after he and six other Rajya Sabha MPs quit the party and announced their move to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

During the protest, workers sprayed the word “gaddar” (traitor) in black paint on the compound walls of Singh’s bungalow, while several protesters wearing black blindfolds raised slogans outside the residence.

Reports said Harbhajan Singh was not at home when the protest took place.

The development comes amid political turbulence in AAP after Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Friday announced his exit from the party after 15 years and said he would join the BJP along with six other parliamentarians.

The move followed weeks of speculation over internal differences after Chadha was removed as AAP’s Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha.

Later in the day, Chadha, Ashok Mittal and Sandeep Pathak joined the BJP in the presence of party chief Nitin Nabin, while Harbhajan Singh, Swati Maliwal, Rajinder Gupta and Vikramjit Sahney are expected to formally join the party shortly.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had on Friday termed the seven departing MPs as “gaddars” and accused the BJP of attempting to weaken AAP and betraying the people of Punjab.

Sources said the merger process involving the seven Rajya Sabha MPs into the BJP parliamentary party is likely to be completed soon, with the Rajya Sabha Chairman expected to clear the formalities.

The political development is being viewed as significant ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
