Udupi, Apr 26: A fire broke out in an old building located right opposite the city bus stand in a prominent area of Udupi on Sunday, April 26 evening.

The building, situated in a prime location, housed a few shops that were operational at the time of the incident. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Onlookers expressed frustration over the delay in the arrival of fire and emergency services, noting that the incident occurred in the heart of the city.

Finally four fire and emergency service vehicles from Udupi, Malpe, Padubidri and Kundapur helped in dousing the fire.

Delay in fire service response is unacceptable. In high-rise areas, every second matters. If help arrives late, how are people supposed to escape? Authorities must act now before tragedy strikes.

Fires in the heart of the city and delays in response clearly show the weak state of our infrastructure. Narrow roads, congested areas and old buildings without proper fire safety are a disaster waiting to happen. We should not wait for loss of lives to fix what has been ignored for years.
