Udupi: Inhuman Exploitation - Woman Toils for Seven Years Without Pay!

Udupi: Inhuman Exploitation - Woman Toils for Seven Years Without Pay!

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Mar 10: The Israeli government has rescued a woman from Udupi district, who was forced to work without any pay for seven years in that country by an individual there. She has been sent back home.

‘Odanadi’, a Mysore-based organization, which was contacted by the Israeli authorities, helped her to reunite with her family. She reached Bangalore from Israel on Thursday, and was produced before the media on Friday.

Reshma with her brother

Reshma (name changed) the 27-year-old who used to work in the house of a Pakistani in Israel. Her job was to look after the Pakistani’s mother. After completing SSLC, she had left for Israel in 2005 from Udupi by securing the said job with the help of a woman she knew. Her salary was fixed at $550 a month. The woman is said to have accompanied the girl to Israel, stayed there for two months, before going back with the money she collected from the employer.

The passport of the lady was seized and kept by the employer with him. When she wanted to go back home, he insisted that she can return only if she provides a replacement for her. The lady, who speaks Konkani and Tulu, said her family had tried to get her back, and a church head in Udupi district had got in touch with Israeli authorities. When the Israeli authorities visited the house where she worked, the owner of the house tried to misguide them. However, they found out through their investigation that he had seized the Reshma’s passport and did not pay her any salary. They then took her to the Women’s Observation Home, and kept here there. They conducted an inquiry during this period. She was there for about three years, before the Israeli police, who found that the employer was guilty, compelled him to pay up $ 43,000 to the lady, before sending her off to India with help from ‘Odanadi’.

Reshma said she is too happy to come back to her country. Her brother received her, and said, he will look after his sister well. She said she is very much relieved, and is eager to unite with her parents and siblings. She plans to start working again, once she gets over the present emotional period.

Parashuram, director, ‘Odanadi’, expressed concern about the huge human trafficking racket  functioning in India, because of which thousands of youth leave the country in search of greener pastures, and then get trapped after losing their passports. He remarked that this lady was lucky to have survived the ordeal and come back with money.

Our central govt is only good for to take care of punjabi's in other countires and not other Indian citizens who suffers or die doesn't care. Look at so many Hindus and Christains suffers in Jammu and Kasmiri realy have no issues for central govt. If one sikh gets in trouble all diplomatic talks starts. Great nation with very discriminative concept.

There are lots of Indians working in Israel who are looked after very well by their Israeli sponsors and I understand that it is one of the best countries to work in. Unlike Arab countries, one would hardly hear this type of atrocities shown towards maids and workers by the Israelites. Since the sponsor involved in this particular case is a non-Israelite, this could be an exceptional case.

Although it is not my intention to compare Arabs to Israelites, I can’t stop from writing about the abuses taken place in the Arab World. The maids go to these countries leaving their near and dear ones, paying huge amount to their agents. They hardly have any access to the Labor Court and many of the Labor Clauses are not applicable to them. Since most of the maids want to remain there and continue working, they don’t dare to lodge complaint against their sponsors. Once they land in their “dreamland”, they have no voice at all. They work round the clock, seven days a week for a pittance of salary, not to mention unpaid salary and ill-treatment meted out to them. Thousands of housemaids escape from their sponsors’ home and take refuge in their respective embassies in order to escape from the brutalities of their sponsors and their household folks, such as sexual abuse, overwork, no payment and underpayment. The embassies then take their cases to the Labor Dept. and finally repatriate them.

Having said this, I would not point my finger at all the Arabs. There are some God-fearing who respect all kinds of humans but their percentage is miniscule.

I am glad this woman is back safe and united with her families. You lived for seven years without pay. It is ridiculous to stay with a Pakistani family who are most un reliable. You are lucky to be alive as these monsters could have done anything. I had been to Israel on a visit and I met some people and some of them told similar stories. I know people want to go abroad and make a decent living for their families back home. But I do not know why she had to wait for such a long time. She could have gone to th Indian Mission and maybe they could have helped you out unless you legal status was OK. Find out who sponsored you and put that Paki. in Jail. He is a criminal and justice should be done to you.

Indians are allowed to work in Israel only as caretakers at houses. No one can work in office. Egyptians are allowed to work in construction. Each country is allowed to work in some specialized work. Indians are not allowed to work in any other field. But few are allowed by their sponsors to work part time in other houses. Salaries are good but agents are taking huge amounts upto 4 lacks for two yrs contract.

There are so many such cases which went on to history and will continue this way until the job seekers in Israel must obey the rules and regulations imposed by Labour Welfare Department of Indian Government.

The sufferers who got cheated in Isarael never reveals that to anyone at back home fearing for their dignity. Others who sees them back home with higher status level tempts to avail the same facility by working in Israel. The fact is 80% of the ladies working in Israel as domestic servant or caretakers are harrased mentally or physically.

leave your lust for making money in easier way by spending lakhs and save yourself from any sought of danger.

Dear CARETAKERS (working in Israel) if u have any problems plz contact Kav LaOved. It is a NON-PROFIT organization that provides consultation and legal aid to workers. It is a criminal offence for an Employer or Agency to keep or confiscate your Passport. Now coming to main point, ie, Agency Fees. The Agency is NOT ALLOWED to charge any ANY AMOUNT for arranging your working permit or bringing you to Israel. In addition, the agency is not allowed to charge you for finding an employer if you already in Isreal.(Workers Rights for Caregivers {7/2011}). At present Agents are charging Rs. 3.5 lacs for Girls & Rs. 5.5 lacs for boys. Agents-Subagents loot our money. It is totally illegal. Now it is a right time to STOP THIS MAFIA.

ODANADI did a great job in lenten season. God Bless you.

this woman would not have suffered this ordeal if our country could provide her some means of living. we fail to understand this and start blaming people if they leave for better oppurtunities. why cant there be greener pastures here in india. we want cheap labour, so payless. people who work dont want to work but want more money.. thts the attitude our people have developed. cant work hard in ones own country but will go abroad and work like donkeys for inhuman hours. time for government ie, none other than us the citizens of this great country to provide ways and means of survival and a decent life in india....till then ... people will take the risk and go out of india to seek money...get exploited and comes in news .. everyone gets excited for sometime then go back to our own lives... who is to blame for all this then?????????

I have worked in Israel for nearly 8 years..my first 2years with diplomats gave me a hard time and then Iam able to work with Israelis..over all, Israeli families treating much much better then our Indian families, specially mangaloreans..now here I would like to inform the readers is that our indian people who is charging more then 4/5 lakhs to go to Israel to work is completly Iilegall business.there are some agents and many sub agents invovled.the govt of Israel is asking anot permiting to charge a penny for the employee, but they get paid by the employer.here it's starts with an indian who seems to be an domstic worker/caretaker,produces someone from India, then there are many agents who charge a fee that reaches 4to 5 lakhs.all this is done in public.it is a big racket.some people made crores of Rs while many are suffering to get the money back by working here and there.hope there is somebody to stop this kind of racket and get the agents behind bars.

This should be reminder to all Indians who are flocking Israel to work as care takers. It is very well known and documented that Israeli's were the one who started slave trade by taking Africans to United States and other parts of the world. Even though there is a Pakistani origin person is involved in this case, off late there are many such instances of abuse on Indians in Israel.

In red light areas, the women are forced in to prostituion, chained and beaten...Has anyone cared about them.. Slavery, holding some one against their will, forcible work and long working hours and night working are agains the basic tenets of womens employment... What a great deed from Israeli authorities and Odanadi, we should thank them. Now Indian govt should put the agent behind bar's and consficate the license, if it is not done than other agent's also will be doing the same.
I think a law should be introuced to put half the salary into the account in India by the agent or the person who hires the domestic help.

Slavery in one form or the other continues, the latest incident involving a woman from Udipi being a classic example.

The major reason for the trapped being held indefinitely in an overseas destination may be attributed to the practice of employers taking away employees’ passport on arrival. Although employers have their own reason for doing so, there ought to be some way of seeking redress from exploitation.

The singular reason is that India is still being reckoned as a third-world country, and the government’s apathy towards its citizens is legendary.

Indian workers are exploited all over the world. In this case the lady finally got justice and got home safe with her money. Israeli labour laws are very strong unlike the GCC where millions of workers are working and go through a hell in some cases(Specially Saudi). I am sure lot of people specially S.S.L.C passed from India made lot of money in Israel than working in GCC. Israel work conditions are more or like to that of U.S.A where you get paid hourly and most of the time the person is paid fairly.
