Chennai, May 6: In a significant political development, the Congress party on Wednesday announced its support to actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government in Tamil Nadu, while ending its long-standing alliance with the DMK.
The decision was taken by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), AICC Tamil Nadu incharge Girish Chodankar said in a statement, citing a request from TVK chief Vijay seeking support.

Chodankar said the Congress would extend “full support” to TVK, subject to the condition that no communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution are included in the alliance.
He added that the partnership aims to revive the legacy of Perunthalaivar Kamaraj, while upholding the ideals of social justice espoused by Thanthai Periyar and the constitutional principles of Dr B R Ambedkar.
The Congress leader further said the alliance is based on mutual respect, appropriate power-sharing and shared responsibility, and is intended not only for government formation but also for future elections, including local body polls, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha contests.
The move marks a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics, with Congress breaking away from its long-time ally DMK.
