Hosabettu ward turns into a ‘smart surveillance’ model in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, May 6: In a significant step towards enhancing urban safety and cleanliness, ward no 8 (Hosabettu), under the Mangaluru City Corporation’s Surathkal subdivision, has emerged as a model ward with the launch of an advanced 'smart security' system.

As part of this initiative, a total of 107 high-tech CCTV cameras have been installed across the ward in the first phase, at an estimated cost of Rs 39 lakh. These cameras will function round-the-clock, ensuring continuous monitoring and helping curb illegal activities in the area.

The project, envisioned by local corporator Varun Chowta, is being hailed as a first-of-its-kind effort in Karnataka, where such a large number of surveillance cameras have been deployed within a single ward. Beyond security, the system also aims to improve civic discipline by keeping a strict check on improper waste disposal.

Adding to its uniqueness, the ward has introduced a QR code-based 'Digital Bridge' system. QR code boards have been placed at key locations, allowing residents to instantly access essential information by simply scanning them on their mobile phones. This includes contact details of nearby hospitals, temples, churches, mosques, and other emergency services.

The QR interface is designed to be user-friendly and accessible in three languages—Tulu, Kannada, and English—ensuring a wider reach among the local population.

According to Dhanaraj, president of the Maruti Colony Residents’ Association, the system has already been implemented in major areas such as Maruti Colony and NMPT Colony, making essential services more accessible to the public.

Overall, Hosabettu ward stands as a strong example of how the effective use of technology can transform local governance, ensuring better safety, improved cleanliness, and enhanced public convenience.
