Mangaluru/Udupi/Kasargod, May 10: The pre-monsoon showers have intensified across the coastal region, with Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasargod districts experiencing good rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, thunder, and lightning on Saturday, May 9.
Dakshina Kannada experiences cooling relief
Sullia and its surrounding areas witnessed heavy downpours. Mangaluru city experienced strong winds and thunderstorms during the night, bringing much-needed relief from the sweltering heat that persisted throughout the day. The maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 33.4 degrees Celsius (a dip of 0.5 degrees from normal), while the minimum temperature stood at 25.4 degrees Celsius.
Vittal and its surrounding areas witnessed a heavy downpour for about 45 minutes starting from 5.30 pm, accompanied by strong winds and lightning. In Puttur taluk, places like Bettampadi, Sampya, Kabaka, Uppinangady, and Kumbra also received good showers on Saturday, following the heavy rains that lashed the taluk on May 8.
48 electricity poles damaged in Uppinangady
The heavy rain and strong winds on Friday evening wreaked havoc in the Uppinangady Mescom division, damaging 48 electricity poles. The power disruption continued into Saturday.
Trees and heavy branches crashed onto power lines in areas including Hirebandadi, Bajathur, Periyadka, Kemmara, and Perndaje. Mescom personnel managed to restore 28 poles by Saturday. The gusty winds also uprooted several areca nut trees in the region, causing significant agricultural losses. The main power line connecting Puttur and Uppinangady remained disrupted from Friday until Saturday evening, plunging several connected areas into darkness.
Rs 70,000 loss estimated in Udupi district
Strong winds and rain caused damages estimated at over Rs 70,000 across Udupi district. In Mudradi village of Hebri taluk, a cow belonging to a resident named Poornima died after a tree fell on it.
Houses belonging to Amitha Bhat in Hebri and Madhava in Karkala were partially damaged due to tree falls. Agricultural crops belonging to Godwin Sudhir in Hebri and Ananda Nayak in Kadtala were also destroyed. Kaup recorded 32.6 mm of rainfall, while Hebri and Karkala received 12.7 mm and 6.7 mm respectively. Moderate rainfall was also reported in Udupi and Manipal on Friday night.
Showers in Kasargod; IMD issues forecast
In Kasargod district, Perla, Badiyadka, and Kasargod town experienced thunderstorms on Saturday night, while Kumbla, Manjeshwar, and Kunjathur saw moderate rain.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued thunderstorms and rain across the coastal districts for the next three days. The IMD center in Thiruvananthapuram has also predicted rain across various parts of the state until May 15.
