Dubai, May 12: Dubai Municipality has successfully completed the Middle East’s first pilot project using advanced Mobile Mapping technology for surveying waterways and canals, in a major push towards strengthening the emirate’s smart city and digital infrastructure vision.

As part of the initiative, Dubai Municipality deployed the advanced Leica TRK system on a specially equipped survey vessel to conduct high-precision mapping operations along the Dubai Water Canal in the Al Jaddaf area.

Officials said the project enabled the creation of highly detailed spatial datasets and sophisticated 3D models aimed at enhancing Dubai’s geospatial ecosystem and supporting future urban planning, infrastructure management and Digital Twin initiatives.

According to the municipality, the initiative will provide accurate and continuously updated spatial data to improve smart city operations, urban development planning, infrastructure monitoring and sustainable city management.

Dubai Municipality stated that the project was implemented in collaboration with specialised partners and would pave the way for broader use of advanced geospatial technologies across future infrastructure and development projects.

Director of the GIS Centre Department at Dubai Municipality, Eng. Maitha Alnuaimi, said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Dubai’s digital infrastructure through an integrated geospatial database.

“This initiative supports Dubai’s Digital Twin project and enables government entities to make accurate and timely decisions based on reliable data,” she said.

She added that the project further strengthens Dubai’s position as a smart and future-ready city while enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of urban management systems.

Dubai Municipality also revealed plans to expand surveying operations across waterways in different parts of the emirate in coordination with relevant authorities as part of the next phase of the project.

Officials said the wider rollout is expected to improve integration of smart systems and further boost the resilience, sustainability and operational efficiency of city management across Dubai.

The initiative forms part of Dubai’s broader strategy to adopt advanced technologies and build future-focused urban infrastructure.
