NEET-UG 2026 cancelled over paper leak row; fresh exam to be held after CBI probe

New Delhi, May 12: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3 following allegations linked to irregularities and a suspected paper leak, triggering uncertainty among lakhs of medical aspirants across the country.

In an official statement, the NTA said the decision was taken after reviewing inputs received from central agencies and findings shared by law enforcement authorities. The agency stated that the integrity of the examination process had been compromised and the test “could not be allowed to stand” in its current form.

The matter had earlier been referred to central agencies on May 8 for verification and investigation. Following the findings, the Union government approved the cancellation of the examination and ordered a fresh test.

The government has also handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a comprehensive probe into the alleged irregularities connected to the examination process. The NTA said it would extend full cooperation to the investigating agency and provide all required documents and records.

The agency clarified that fresh dates for the re-conduct of NEET-UG 2026 would be announced shortly through official channels. New admit cards will be issued ahead of the examination.

NTA further stated that candidates will not be required to register again for the fresh examination. Existing registration details, candidature data and examination centres selected during the original application process will remain valid for the re-test.

The agency also confirmed that no additional fee would be charged from students for the re-examination. Examination fees already paid by candidates will be refunded.

In its statement, the NTA acknowledged the inconvenience caused to students and parents but said the decision was necessary to protect the credibility and transparency of the national examination system.

Students and parents have been advised to rely only on official announcements and avoid misinformation circulating on social media platforms.
