Moderate Intensity Tremor Rocks Kashmir


Srinagar, Mar 12 (IANS): A moderate intensity tremor rocked the Kashmir Valley Monday but no immediate loss of life or property was reported, an official said.

Sonam Lotus, director of the local meteorological office told IANS: "A moderate intensity earthquake occurred at 11.36 a.m. Monday with epicentre in Jammu and Kashmir-Pakistan (Gilgit) border."

"The magnitude of the quake was 5.8 on the Richter scale. Its coordinates were latitude 36.8 degrees north and longitude 73.4 degrees east," he added.

More than 40,000 people were killed in a major quake in parts of divided Kashmir across the line of control (LOC) that occurred Oct 8, 2005.

The 2005 temblor measured 7.9 on the Richter scale.
