Mangaluru, May 13: In a proactive measure to prevent burglaries in unattended homes, the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate has introduced the 'Locked House Beat System' (LHBS) within its jurisdiction. This system, aimed at keeping a regular watch on vacant homes, has already been implemented in various other parts of the state.

Launched as a community policing initiative, the LHBS is designed to ensure the safety of locked houses while the occupants are away. By maintaining regular surveillance, the police aim to provide complete security until the homeowners return. Citizens who lock their homes to travel for vacations, tours, or family functions can now notify the police to ensure their property is closely monitored.

The police department has clarified that this security initiative applies exclusively to independent, individual houses. It does not cover flats in apartment complexes or commercial buildings.

Once informed, the police will intensify their beat in the vicinity of the registered locked house. Night patrolling will be increased in these specific areas, and personnel will keep a strict vigil for any suspicious movements or individuals loitering around the property.

The primary objectives of the scheme are:
• To prevent thefts and burglaries in locked houses.
• To make night patrolling more targeted and effective.
• To encourage public participation and cooperation in crime prevention.

How to avail the service: Residents planning to leave their homes vacant for a few days can avail themselves of this service by sending a message to the police control room's dedicated WhatsApp number.

The message must include the homeowner's name, complete residential address, Google Maps location, the exact dates of absence, and a selfie taken with the house. The public can send these details to the WhatsApp number: 9480802321.
