Honour for Mangalore Airport: First in South India to Get Australian Recognition

Bangalore, Mar 13 (DHNS): The Mangalore airport secured OHSAS:18001-2000 certification by Giant Accreditation Board of Australia and New Zealand, Australia, on Monday.

The recognition comes for the Airport’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
Mangalore Airport is the first to get the recognition in entire South India.

Airport Director M R Vasudeva said the certification will be valid till March 10, 2015. The certification agency had visited the airport twice before conferring the certificate.

    Hats off to Mr. Jack!
My only wish here is atleast one customs officer read these comments! It is very very sad to witness the officers harassing the poor labourers who has worked in the Gulf tirelessly in the scorchng sun and goes home with a few gifts for his family and the customs at Bajpe demanding from these poor laboureres who panic! Customs officers, come and see the lives of labourers in the Gulf and judge for yourselves what you are doing is right or wrong. The best thing Mr. Vasudev can do is to control these corrupt custom officials.

I totally agree with Mr.Jack and Mr.Suraj. Customs officers at Mangalore Airport are the most corrupt compared to any Indian Airports. For even a 32" LCD TV ( which is a non duty item in all Indian Airports), they shamelessly demand money. If any goes for dispute, after collecting money from all cooperating passengers, they will show some printouts justifying they are right. Overall in one flight they collect money from 50 passengers and cut official receipt for two passengers who are going for discussion. This way they make him as the last person to exit the Airport.

Everytime I take this Dubai-M'lore flight by AIR-INDIA ,i first pray to almighty god for a safe landing in M'lore. All other things are secondary. If we are no-more then nothing exists. The problem in M'lore airport is that in olden days, rich travellers used to show-off by giving tips to some staff. Now the same thing has become curruption which is unavoidable.

The Airport charges Rs 60/- per car as parking fees if stationed for 10 minutes or more. But what is the facility provided ? not even some shade ! If one has to use the toilet Rs 3/- has to be paid !

I feel the parking fee is too high and should be reduced as no facility is provided.According to me considering the facility provided Rs 10/- should suffice.

I wonder what is the motive of this certification.
Can a direct flight from Australia or New Zealand land in Mangalore?
    Think……………

I like this question. People this very inteligent question must be answered. Any thoughts.
We can get all stuff but if the flights don't land what is the use?

Good work to get a OSHA recognition, but what about the most important Flight safety requirement of lengthening of the runway by atleast 4000 to 6000 ft for enough spill over factor. I hope you donot want a repeat incident.

First of all, let us congratulate the management of Mangalore airport for this achievement.
However, we need some improvement in basic facilities such as free to passengers (without charge for 15 minutes), proper restaurant facility and post/telephone facilities.
Let us hope this will ultimately lead to 'international' recognition.

I wish our NGOs & Press go and investigate these ports and punish the corrupt custom officials in both the places. They are more organised and expert in looting the poor Gulf returnee NRIs as well as the Govt. Treasury for allowing dutiable goods, free for a bribe.

Still I remember my first landing in this airport where I was forced to pay a bribe of 100 Dirhams for my luggage . I had to reach my home desperately i just left by paying .. I appreciate if Airport Director M R Vasudeva can make sure movements of all customs officers are within the span of CCTV cameras.

I completely agree what Mr. Suraj has to say. I travel from Doha 3- 4 times a year to Mlore and each time I have experienced a new way of harrassment from the customs staff. I talk tough and create a scene and give them on their faces, so they keep quiet. I have seen an innocent labourer harassed for 100 ,200 rials for just bringing an old used laptop. Their modus operandi is , one customs officer comes and questions him and takes him aside and the others join him. The person who is being questioned panics ( naturally) with all the commotion and gives in to their demands. All other bystanders , fellow travellers are only watching. Its none of their business you see?!!! Each one to his own and we all talk about corruption and bad service and this and that. Each time I stand up to a corrupt official even if it means standing up for someone else.

When push comes to shove I use all limbs to oust the ***tards. All people, do not ever succumb to these peoples demands. There is no law that says one cannot carry eletronic goods above 25,000 INR. There is no circular or notification in this regard sent by Govt Of India ( Aviation authorities) notifying travellers. The next time someone is harassed, will you stand up for her or him??? If you do, some point and time , someone will stand up for you.

    Tue, Mar 13 2012

Getting Australian Recognition or any other certification for Mangalore Air port is not important. First and formost the employees working there should be well trained and non corrupt specially the customs duty officers, they only try to squeeze money and harass the travellers from Gulf even for the items which does not have customs duty. The whole custom department is involved in it. I had few bad experience when I landed in Mangalore airport. Since I had quite a good knowledge of a travellers rights I could give them properly back. But I have seen them harassing other travellers who are innocent who carry electronic items worth below Rs. 25,000/- and end up paying in thousands to the customs officers due to their harassment. Our govt. has to take strict action on these corrupt officers. When they loot travellers openly. why the govt. and media are keeping quite. Is it that the media is not allowed inside the airport to shoot these kind of activities. I am in Gulf for 12 years and the worst corrupt airport which I have seen is the mangalore airport. They even ask money for non duty custom items. Travellers please note that we have the rights to carry electronics Items worth upto Rs. 25,000/- for which there is not custom duty and no office have the rights to ask duty for the electronic items which is below the same. Either these officers lack knowledge or they think they have the power and can fool any people. Well, I would request all the travellers from Gulf who land in mangalore airport to know your travelling rights so that even you guys can give back properly to such corrupt duty officers. Shame to mangalore airport authority.

They are suitable only for tall men who are above 6ft in height. I don’t know how these awards are awarded, even Mumbai airport was one of the best ten airports in February reports.
