Dharamsala, May 15: The IPL 2026 playoff race took another dramatic turn as Mumbai Indians defeated Punjab Kings, handing PBKS their fifth consecutive loss and tightening the battle for the final qualification spots.
Despite the defeat, Punjab Kings remain fourth on the points table with 13 points from 12 matches. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans currently occupy the top two spots with 16 points each from 12 games, while Sunrisers Hyderabad sit third with 14 points.

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, both on 12 points from 11 matches, remain firmly in contention, while Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals also retain outside chances of making the playoffs.
Batting first, Punjab Kings posted a competitive 200 for 8 after a solid start from Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya. The duo added a brisk 50-run opening partnership in just 33 balls before Prabhsimran continued the momentum with a half-century.
He later stitched together a 57-run stand with Cooper Connolly as PBKS crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over.
Mumbai Indians fought back strongly through Shardul Thakur, who claimed four wickets for 39 runs to slow Punjab’s progress. However, PBKS managed to collect 53 runs in the final three overs to push their total to 200.
In reply, Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start through Ryan Rickelton, who dominated the powerplay despite Rohit Sharma struggling at the other end. MI raced to 59 without loss before Punjab clawed back into the contest with three wickets between the seventh and 13th overs.
However, Tilak Varma produced a match-winning knock of 75 not out off just 33 deliveries to guide Mumbai home in 19.5 overs. He first shared a crucial 61-run partnership with Sherfane Rutherford before combining with Will Jacks to complete the chase.
The defeat leaves Punjab Kings under pressure, with victories in their remaining two matches now crucial to keeping their playoff hopes alive.
