Mangalore, Mar 15: President of state Beary Sahitya Academy Rahim Uchil was attacked by a gang of six miscreants here on Thursday March 15.

He has been admitted to Unity hospital and his condition is said to be serious. It is said to be a murder attempt.

Two of the six miscreants barged into the Beary Academy office in Presidium complex at Attavar, while the others vandalized it from the outside. The attackers stabbed Uchil in the stomach, neck and hand. The attender and some others who were inside were also injured, sources said.

The miscreants, who came on three bikes, also pelted stones and smashed the office property, it is learnt.

Swords and other weapons were found lying near an apartment opposite Presidium complex.

Eyewitnesses said that the men had covered their faces with handkerchiefs, and hence identification was difficult. Also, the number plates of the bikes had been deliberately covered with mud.

Senior police officials and other policemen rushed to the spot. Pandeshwar police are investigating.

The incident was recorded by a CCTV camera installed at a beauty parlour nearby. However, the recording was not clear and did not help much in identifying the attackers.

Two women staff of the office later said that they rushed to nearby shops to hide. Some of the shops shut down their shutters as soon as the incident took place.

Rahim's family members including his wife Shahina are at the hospital. Local BJP leaders also rushed to the hospital.

Rahim Uchil is also the general secretary of the district BJP minority unit.

Disturbing news indeed. If this type of incidents are to take place on political reasons then it seems grave danger for democrecy in Mangalore. This is very serious matter.Off late Mangalore is fast growing tiar II city in the country as well as in crime rate also.
By reading criminal news of the city of recent times it gives a clear picture on failure of law enforcing authority here.
When Gopal Hosur was in charge the crime rate here was at minimal. He was a great Police office with commitment.
