Colombo, Jun 4: At least 11 people lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries after a fire broke out at an elderly care home in Sri Lanka's Kalutara district, police said on Thursday.

The blaze erupted around 5:30 pm on Wednesday at the Mawpiya Sevana Elderly Care Home in Anguruwatota, located about 65 km southeast of Colombo.

According to police, 10 residents were found dead at the facility, while another victim succumbed to injuries after being admitted to Horana Base Hospital.

Authorities said 51 residents were safely rescued from the home, while seven injured persons continue to receive treatment in hospital.

The fire was brought under control with the assistance of local residents and police personnel.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Initial reports suggested that a gas cylinder explosion may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. However, officials said the exact cause of the fire is yet to be established.

According to local media reports, the rescued residents have been temporarily housed at a nearby school, and arrangements are underway to shift them to a safer accommodation facility.
