Mangaluru, Jun 7: Marking World Environment Day on June 5, the students of Mount Carmel Central School, Mangaluru, actively promoted environmental stewardship through a beach clean-up drive, an awareness rally, and a series of eco-themed competitions.
The day began with 24 NCC cadets participating in a beach clean-up drive at Sasihithlu Beach, Surathkal. Accompanied by ANO Teena and NCC Coordinator Philomena, the cadets worked in four teams - Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta, to clear litter from different sections of the shoreline. Despite intermittent rain, they carried out the task with dedication and teamwork, contributing towards a cleaner and healthier coastal environment.

The scouts and guides participated in an environmental awareness rally organised by the Bharat Scouts and Guides in association with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. The rally, held from Yeyyadi to KPT Polytechnic College, saw enthusiastic participation of students from different schools carrying placards and raising slogans advocating environmental protection. Representing the school were 17 Junior Division (JD) cadets and 7 Junior Wing (JW) cadets, accompanied by scout master Veeresh and guide captain Aparna. Undeterred by the rainy weather, the participants spread a powerful message of conservation and civic responsibility.
To further foster environmental awareness, the school organised a series of competitions for students from grades I to XII. Grades I – IV participated in drawing competitions on age-appropriate environmental themes, while grade V students showcased their creativity through poster design and slogan writing.
Grade VI students took part in the wealth from waste competition. The story illustration competition for grades vii and viii, collage-making competition for grades ix and x, and mascot design competition for grades XI and XII provided meaningful platforms for students to express their commitment to sustainability.
The enthusiastic participation across all activities reflected the true spirit of World Environment Day. Through creativity, awareness and action, the students reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the environment and building a greener, and more sustainable future.
