Udupi, Jun 9: A speed breaker located near a school zone in Mission Compound has become a cause for concern among motorists due to the absence of proper road markings, warning signs, and reflective indicators.
The speed breaker is situated on the busy stretch connecting Udupi and Bailoor, near the Udupi Town Police Station, affecting vehicles travelling in both directions—from Udupi towards Bailoor and from Bailoor towards Udupi. While regular commuters are aware of the speed breaker’s presence, those who use the road infrequently often face difficulties.

Motorists unfamiliar with the road reportedly approach the area at normal speed and are caught off guard upon reaching the hump. Several commuters have complained that the lack of advance warning and visibility, especially during night hours and adverse weather conditions, increases the risk of losing control of vehicles and meeting with accidents.
The speed breaker previously had proper road markings. However, following recent road repair and re-asphalting work carried out on the stretch, the markings disappeared and have not been restored. Similar unmarked speed breakers can be found on several roads across the city, posing risks to unsuspecting motorists.
Local residents and road users have urged the authorities to immediately install reflective paint, road markings, caution boards, and cat-eye reflectors on the speed breaker to alert motorists in advance. They pointed out that the location is close to a school zone, making road safety measures even more essential.
They emphasized that the concerned department must take prompt action before a serious accident occurs, noting that preventive measures can significantly enhance the safety of students, pedestrians, and motorists who use the stretch daily.
